Outback Experience 1 Day Tour From Adelaide

Utilising a 45min flight from Adelaide in place of a 4 hour drive we put South Australia's iconic outback with in easy reach those staying in Adelaide.

Similar to our Wilpena Pound 1 day tour, this tour concentrates more on touring the vast outback plains on a private working sheep & cattle station.

This amazing tour also retraces the first european exploration in South Australia's Outback, by famed Australian explorers Matthew Flinders & Edward John Eyre in the early 1800's, in search of a mythical inland sea!

Firstly on arrival you will cruise to the very top of Spencer Gulf on our iconic 'Top End Eco Cruise' with an amazing & unique setting of mangroves with red outback sand hills.

It's then when travel on the little known, rarely traveled Depot Creek road that is South Australia's original Outback track, to Wilkatana Station. You visit Depot Creek one of the most historic points for South Australia's Outback exploration, so named just as you this point was a staging point for most of South Australia's exploration of the Outback.

We visit a shearing shed still used to shear 5000 Merino sheep each year & a chance to handle one of the wool fleeces.

Passing through an arid forest of ancient Myall trees reported to be upto 1000 years old, the red outback sand hills now become more prevalent until we reach an isolated salt pan that was once the ancient head of Spencer Gulf.

We then have an opportunity to walk among a red outback sand hill looking for remanents of the mega fauna that tens of thousands of years ago walked the earth.

One of the wow spots of this outback exploration, is the top of a remote red sand hill that provides you with a 100 mile panoramic landscape that stretches from Wilpena Pound to the North past Mount Brown to the South.

With Sharp Airlines your flight will follow virtually the same route taken by famed explorer Edward John Eyre in 1839 & that of ancient indigenous trade routes. As you near Port Augusta the land transforms. The Flinders Ranges to the right rise up from the farm land flats & the flat plateau’s of the Baxter ranges to the left are in stark contrast yet consist of the same rock sediments that form the Flinders ranges. As both of the mountain ranges head north they squeeze the Spencer Gulf into a narrow waterway that will be the first leg of your memorable journey.

8:30-10:30 Top End Eco Cruise 

You will cruise to the head of Spencer Gulf among an unparalleled setting of stunning red cliffs, mangroves red outback Sand hills with the Flinders Ranges as your back drop. All the while looking out for the resident dolphin pod. 

10:30-17:00   Tour the Outback 

We head north in a luxury 4x4 on South Australia’s rarely travelled original outback track into the wide outback skirted by the Flinders Ranges. Whilst the luxury Land Rover provides a smooth ride looking over the bonnet confirms you are on a road less travelled. Its then onto Wilkatana Station a working sheep & cattle property that has the distinction of being one of the few properties that has mountains, outback plains, red outback sandhill & saltpans. It’s also the home of the ancient top of the gulf. Being off the main tourist track this part of the Flinders Ranges remains largely undisturbed & seen by a privileged few & provides a landscape that will never be forgotten.

At the discretion of the operator cancellations 30-7 days prior to departure may be held over for use within 12 months.
